Panasonic is rallying behind the cause of bunny neutering

In one of the oddest public-relations efforts to emerge in recent memory, Panasonic is rallying behind the cause of bunny neutering--yes, bunny neutering--to promote its Oxyride Extreme Power batteries.

"When you think bunnies and batteries, you picture a bunny with a drum," reads the Panasonic e-mail pitch for the company's new "Neuter your Bunny" campaign. "Those days are over. Panasonic's Oxyride Extreme Power batteries significantly outperform Energizer Max and its alkaline companions in digital cameras."

In celebration of this performance milestone (stick with us for a moment here), Panasonic is kicking off a campaign to build awareness for the health benefits of neutering pet bunnies while simultaneously touting the performance benefits of using Oxyride batteries. The batteries, which came out last year, are designed for "high-drain" devices such as digital cameras and MP3 players; Panasonic says they last twice as long as traditional alkaline batteries.

Still don't get the battery/bunny birth control connection? "Many people are unaware of the benefits of Panasonic Oxyride batteries, just like many bunny owners are unaware of the benefits of neutering or spaying," reads the newly launched Neuter Your Bunny Web site, which features a "Why Neuter" tab next to a "Why Oxyride" tab. The former page elucidates the benefits, beyond population control, of neutering rabbits (neutered males are calmer and less prone to destruction, it says, while spaying female rabbits eliminates the risk of reproductive cancers). The latter page goes on to explain how Oxyride batteries outperformed alkaline competitors in digital cameras.

But back to bunny neutering. Panasonic says it will honor its battery successes with a donation to the House Rabbit Society, a nonprofit that educates the public on rabbit care and behavior. Ah, how we would have loved to have been in the room when this product crusade was born.

Japan's NEC is developing a new type of eco-friendly battery

The device, which NEC calls a high-power organic radical battery, or ORB, is novel for its environmental sensitivity. NEC said it designed the rechargeable battery to use the electrochemical reaction of organic radical compounds rather than potentially harmful heavy metals such as mercury, lead and cadmium, which are usually found in batteries.

Scientists have been working to improve battery life and make them more eco-friendly than alkaline batteries since the mid-'50s, when solar-powered batteries were introduced.

The ORB technology, initially proposed by NEC in 2001, has gone through a series of tests already. The company did not say when the battery would be available to the general market.

When a power failure, blackout or voltage drop of 20 percent occurs, NEC said ORB sends off a signal to the computer and helps initiate a data backup and shutdown. During this period, the ORB supplies power to the PC. The cells, which weigh an additional 3 ounces, can be easily mounted in most desktop PCs, NEC said.

The 2.1-inch by 1.6-inch battery has enough power to drive a 140-watt PC for about a minute, just enough time, NEC said, for a computer to back up precious files and settings.

In its testing phase, ORB was able to serve as an emergency power source for NEC's typical desktop PC power consumption: 228-watt maximum, 96-watt average, the company said.

The company said it is stepping up its research and development activities in the area of data backup, as well as its research into the ORB's market potential.

NEC and Japan's New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) helped coordinate the development of ORB.

Alternative energy gadgets

Thanks to modern technology, we can waste time in ways our ancestors could only dream of, while they were working down the mine, in black and white. Unfortunately our world of gizmos and gimmicks, doodahs and doofers isn't entirely free: Just ask the polar bears.

One way to save money and the planet simultaneously is to ditch the fossil fuels and electrical leash and seek alternative sources of power. That's where our new sister site SmartPlanet comes in: It reviews products on their quality, value, ethics, and greenness, so inconvenient truths are balanced by conveniently thrifty products. We've picked you out an elite bunch of the best money- and power-saving gadgets our eco-expert buddies have rated.

Windows 7 battery issue

Microsoft says it is looking into a problem that is causing some Windows 7 users to get a warning that there is a problem with their battery when, in fact, there is not.

"We are investigating this issue in conjunction with our hardware partners, which appears to be related to system firmware," a Microsoft representative said in a statement on Tuesday.

The warning in question uses the computer's basic input output system (BIOS) to try to determine whether a battery needs replacement. For some reason, the signals are getting crossed and some users are getting the message even when they should not.

However, because this warning is new to Windows 7, users moving from Vista should not necessarily ignore the message if they see it. Instead, Microsoft suggests users contact their computer maker to see whether the warning is warranted or not.

Meanwhile, Microsoft says it and the PC makers are trying to figure out what is behind the glitch. "We are working with our partners to determine the root cause and will update the forum with information and guidance as it becomes available."

Samsung NC10 Reviews

The NC10 distinguishes itself with battery life. Not only does it come standard with a six-cell battery (most netbooks, such as Lenovo's S10, come standard with a three-cell), but the NC10 has the steam to last you through a flight from New York to California and then some. On the LAPTOP Battery Test (continuous Web surfing over Wi-Fi), the NC10 lasted 6 hours and 34 minutes. Not only is this much higher than the mini-notebook average of 2:27, but it beats out even the six-cell MSI Wind (5:13) and the Eee PC 1000H (4:28).

Note: When we first ran the LAPTOP Battery Test the NC10 yielded a runtime of 7 hours and 34 minutes. This was with the Samsung Battery Manager 2.0 enabled, which dims the screen to its lowest setting after 30 seconds of inactivity on the keyboard or touchpad. The screen is usable during this time, but it's uncomfortable. When we ran the battery test at 50 percent brightness with the Battery Manager disabled, the NC10 ran for 6:34; cranked up to 100 percent, it ran for 4:48.

The NC10's 802.11b/g Wi-Fi card provided a swift connection for working in the cloud. Delivering a strong 20.8 Mbps and 16.9 Mbps from 15 and 50 feet, respectively, we were able to maintain a strong signal far from our access point. This blew away the MSI Wind (14.5/7.7 Mbps) and even the 802.11n-equipped ASUS Eee PC 1000H (10.4/6.1 Mbps). It maintained a strong connection during our day-to-day Web activities; streaming music over Slacker was fluid, and video clips streaming on Hulu.com were void of any pauses.

Software and Warranty
Like many other mini-notebooks, the NC10 runs Windows XP Home. Samsung also bundles its own utilities, including the Samsung Recovery Solution III (which creates a restore file of the operating system) and Samsung Magic Doctor (which will detect problems with applications and help to correct any issues). Other tools include an Easy Battery Manager 2.0 that allows for tweaking power-saving settings and an Easy Network Manager for connecting to a wireless access point. The NC10 also came preloaded with McAfee SecurityCenter (60-day trial) and Adobe Acrobat Reader. Samsung covers this netbook with a one-year warranty and 24/7 toll-free technical support.
